Rugby Players Tackling Poker

As poker continues to grow in popularity around the world more and more professional athletes from a wide range of sports – rugby included — are tackling the game, from playing in charity events to taking a seat at some of the world’s top poker tournaments such as the World Series of Poker. Some poker and casino online sites have sponsored athletes from various sports including Boris Becker and Shane Warne, while PokerStars has held special online tournaments that give poker players a chance to take a seat at the virtual tables with rugby stars such as Mike Tindall, Dylan Hartley and David Strettle.

Unlike football — which has numerous former players such as Teddy Sheringham, Tony Cascarino, and Jan Vang Sorensen who have had lots of success at poker tournaments around the world — rugby players haven’t yet had quite the same impact on the game, at least as far as professional players. That hasn’t stepped several online sites from offering special rugby promotions for players and PokerStars has in the past been a primary sponsor for the English National Rugby Football Union. The deal has included advertising during matches as well as special online tournaments and prize draws that award tickets to various rugby matches and events for some lucky players.

Charity poker events are popular in many sports and rugby is no exception, especially with the buzz surrounding the current Rugby World Cup. The Grosvenor Casino in Leeds recently held a charity poker night to support Rob Burrow’s Testimonial and Martin House Children’s Hospice and the US Rugby Foundation has held several different charity events attended by top poker pros (and former recreational rugby players) such as Blair Rodman and Gavin Smith. Charity poker events are popular draws as they often award plenty of nice prizes for top finishers and are usually a more relaxed, fun atmosphere where fans can get to take a seat at the table and rub elbows with some of their rugby and poker heroes.

Many online gambling sites now offer rugby fans the chance to not just play poker online but also bet on rugby matches as well as trying their hand at video poker video poker and other casino games. It only takes a few minutes to open and start up your online account and you’ll be able to use the same account to access a wide range of offerings, from sportsbetting to hundreds of casino games to other offerings like bingo, lotto, and scratch cards.
