Benfica vs Barcelona Preview:

The Portuguese team will attempt to end the 30-year wait for a victory against Spanish teams.

Matchday two in Group G sees Tito Vilanova’s team will travel to Lisbon to meet Jesús side.

October 2, 2012 in Lisbon will be a meeting of the second round of the group stage of the Champions League, in which the local club Benfica will play with the Catalan grand from Barcelona.

In the first round of the group stage, the Portuguese club played away game against the Scottish Celtic. Benfica was closer to victory, but the game ended in a draw. Barcelona played a home match against Spartak Moscow. The game was very hard and challenging. Barcelona had to win back two goals. The final score of the game was 3-2 in favour of the Spanish grandee.

After the victory over Spartak, the Catalan club with three points stands in the first place in the Group G. Benfica goes the second and has one point.

It should be noted, that the head coach of Portuguese club uses similar to the Spanish tactical scheme. Jesús plays with three defenders, four players in the midfield, which gives an indication to support the attack, and work in defensive zone. And in the attack the Portuguese coach uses three players that also comes back to relieve the pressure on the opponent.

Barcelona played against Sevilla this weekend. The match was very difficult, cause Catalans have conceded two goals, and than managed to pull out a victory with a score 2-3. Barcelona has not lost a single meeting this season and leads La Liga.

Defending champion Real Madrid will visit the Camp Nou next weekend. This is a very complicated week for Barcelona. Today we should expect some changes in the start squad.


Benfica also won with a score 1-2 in the weekend and lead in the Portuguese championship.

Benfica will be playing without striker Oscar Cardozo, who has a muscle injury. Manager Jorge Jesus will play with Rodrigo Lima in the attack.

Also, defender Luisao will be missing. He is serving a two-month ban after pushing a referee in a pre-season friendly match.

Thiago Alcantara will be out for two months for Barcelona. He has rupturing his knee ligaments in the 3-2 win over Sevilla this Saturday.

However, Tito Vilanova has received some good news. Carles Puyol, Andres Iniesta and Adriano are back for training session on Sunday. But Gerard Pique is still recovering from injury.


Benfica line-up: Artur, Pereira, Garay, Jardel, Melgarejo, Salvio, Aimar, Enzo Perez, Gaitan, Rodrigo, Lima.
