Brendan Rodgers takes his ex club for first time since last game at Anfield. The Reds coach leaved the Liberty Stadium after great two-years.
Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool are having a very problematic season. The Reds are twelfth in the league table with just ten points in their nine matches. They need to improve their results quickly if they want to get into Euro competitions. Their recent form consist from four match unbeaten spell. They were very unlucky last week in the game against Everton which ended in a 2-2 draw. It should be said, that a last minute wining goal of Luiz Suarz was wrongly ruled out for offside.
Liverpool has a very small squad this season. So it is expected that their top players like Suarez and Gerrard will play unnecessary games such as this. In the Europa League Liverpool has rotated many of their first team players, so they can use the same squad in this match.
Swansea had a good start in the EPL, but have struggled. They go on the eleventh position in the EPL with eleven points in their nine games. They have lost three of their last five games. They are looking to get back to their early season form. Swansea have also played a weakened match, but they may come to this match more seriously than Liverpool.
For the home side, Luis Suarez is expected to be sidelined for a break. Also this Capital One Cup game gives to Brendan Rodgers an opportunity to test meaning Samed Yesil as well as Raheem Sterling. Joe Allen and Steven Gerrard are all likely to be rested too.
Pepe Reina’s absence in the Sunday’s Merseyside derby, means that he may start in goal. Stewart Downing should start on the left wing, after his good play in last week’s Europa League match with Anzhi. Glen Johnson, Lucas Leiva, Fabio Borini and Martin Kelly are all still out of the game.
For the visitors, the major news concerns Michel Vorm. He has a long term injury. So, German keeper Gerhard Tremmel will start in goal.
Garry Monk the club captain and the main goal scorer could get another chance in this competition. Ashley Williams and Michu with striker Danny Graham will play in the start squad. Kyle Bartley and Neil Taylor are long-term absentees.
