Barcelona vs Benfica Preview:

On the 5th of December Barcelona welcomes Benfica at the Camp Nou in Barcelona. The Eagles need to get three points against Spanish opposition to qualify to the next round. The Catalans play at home and want to please their fans with an excellent game.


Barcelona tops Spanish La Liga with forty points after fourteen games. They have won thirteen and drawn one game.  Presently they have five wins from five matches in all competitions. In the Champions League Barcelona are already qualified as the group winners after four wins and one loss after five rounds. Barcelona has amazing form this season. They have lost only once in all competitions. They have an eleven point lead over Real Madrid in La Liga. In the Champions League they are already qualified to the knockout stages as group winners. Also, the Catalan grand are favourites to win the Champions League title for the third time in five years.

Tito could give a rest to some key players in this game. Messi is still looking for the all-time record for goals scored in a calendar year, so probably he will be playing.  Thiago, Song, Tello and David Villa are all expected to appear.


Benfica are second in the Primeira Liga with twenty six points after ten rounds. They have won and drawn two games. Their recent form has been great with five straight wins in all competitions. In the Champions League they are currently third in the group with two wins, one draw and two losses from their five matches. Benfica need a result here to put the pressure on Celtic who are even on points. If Benfica and Celtic will end up with the same points, then Benfica will go further.

Benfica will hope on equal result between Celtic and Spartak Moscow, and will looking for points in Barcelona. Barcelona will give a great opportunity to Lionel Messi, as Argentinean still expects to down Gerd Muller’s record of 85 goals in a calendar year.

Martin Montoya will start instead of Dani Alves, Xavi, Cesc Fabregas, Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta probably will get rest. David Villa, Tello or Pedro will play in attack alongside Messi.

Knowing they need points, Benfica will name their strongest squad. Oscar Cardozo will lead the attack line alongside Lima and Gaitan.  Luisao will make just his second appearance in this season, after his two-month ban for pushing over a referee.


Barcelona line-up: Valdes, Montoya, Pique, Puyol, Adriano, Song, S. Roberto, Tiago, Tello,Villa, Messi.
