Southampton – Chelsea Preview:

On the 5th of January Southampton welcomes Chelsea at the St. Mary’s Stadium in Southampton, Hampshire. Saints have never been defeated by Blues in the FA Cup. The hosts played well against Arsenal in the last EPL round, so they will try their chances against Rafael Benitez’s team, which were shocked by QPR on Wednesday.

 

Southampton are seventeenth in the EPL standings with eighteen points after twenty games. They have four wins, six draws and ten losses so far this season. Their present form has seen one win, three draws and one defeat from their last five games. Last five home games have seen two wins, two draws and one lost match. Southampton have only one major trophy till now and it is the FA Cup. They beat Manchester United in 1976. Nigel Adkins team is unbeaten in last three matches: against Fulham, Stoke and Arsenal.

 

Chelsea goes fourth in the league table with thirty eight points after twenty games, having eleven wins, five draws and four defeats this season. Their present form has seen four straight wins and one defeat from their last five games. Last five away games in all competitions Blues finished with four wins and one defeat.

Frank Lampard is just one goal behind Kerry Dixon with 193 goals and 10 behind Bobby Tambling that has 202 goals. The Blues have drawn three and lost four games against Southampton in the FA Cup.  Chelsea have won the FA Cup seven times.

 

Southampton head coach could give rest to main forward Rickie Lambert and give a start to James Ward-Prowse. Nigel Adkins can’t count on Adam Lallana.

Chelsea will be looking for rehabilitation after being beaten by QPR at the Stamford Bridge. Goalkeeper Ross Turnbull will continue in goal instead of injured Petr Cech. The Blues are still without John Terry and Oriol Romeu.
