Ghana vs Mali Preview:
On January 24th Ghana welcomes Mali at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth. The last time Ghana won the AFCON in 1982. Ghana head coach Kwesi Appiah is an ex-captain of the Black Stars, so he is very motivated.
This is the second round and the second game in Group “B”. Last year Mali beat Ghana in the fight for the bronze medals. Ghana drew in their first game with Congo with the score 2-2. Mali won their first match against Niger with the score 1-0. So, they are the leaders of the group “B”. Ex-Barcelona player Seydou Keita scored the winning goal and dedicated his goal to the people of Mali. Mali are playing for eighth time at the tournament, while Ghana are making their nineteenth appearance at the AFCON. The Eagles best result in the history of this tournament was in 1972. When they played in the final and finished as runners-up.
The Black Stars are under pressure after their first draw-game. But the Malians were looking very well and fought hard to get a 1-0 victory over Niger. It is the third fixture between these two teams in the last year. At the AFCON 2012 Ghana beat Mali 2-0 in the group stage. Then the Black Stars were defeated with the same score in the third place play-off.
Ghana were in need of the services of some key players who had injury worries in the first match. So, their head coach Kwesi Appiah will be hoping that those players will be available.Defender Isaac Vorsah was unable after the fitness test. Anthony Annan was subbed. These two players have chances to return to the starting squad against Mali. Asamoah Gyan and Mubarak Wakaso had some health problems after the game with Congo, but they should be fit for the second game.
Mali came into this years competition full of confidence after winning bronze medals last year. Their manager Patrice Carteron has a group of players who have played together. The Eagles will hope that Seydou Keita, Diawara and Diabate will certainly be a thorn in the flesh of Ghana’s team.
