Donbass Arena – Donetsk.
Both teams will try to continue their impressive Champions League season. The champions of Ukraine and Germany will clash in the first leg game at the Donbass Arena, hoping to pick up advantage.
Shakhtar are top of the Ukrainian Premier League with 51 points from 18 games. Their present form has seen four straight wins and one defeat from last five friendly games. In the Champions League they finished second, standing two points behind Juventus and even on points with Chelsea. But they had a better head to head result and finished above the current trophy holders. Shakhtar have a big question of their form, cause of the Ukrainian league winter break since the start of December. Shakhtar have tried to keep their match fitness and game form by playing seven friendlies since mid-January. They have performed well, winning six and losing one game. They haven’t played in a competitive way over two months, but have won 10 of their 12 mid-season games. Their best star player Willian was transferred to Anzhi for €35 million and Taison from Metalist Kharkiv joined them in January for €15.2 million. The 1-0 defeat against Juventus on the last day of the tournament was the only home game that Mircea Lucescu’s team lost in the whole of 2012 year.
Borussia Dortmund goes second in the Bundesliga with 39 points from 21 matches. Their present form has seen three wins and two defeats from last five games. In the Champions League they topped their group ahead of Real Madrid, Ajax and Manchester City, finishing unbeaten. Dortmund are 15 points behind of the leaders Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, so this could mean that Dortmund will concentrate more effort on the Champions League. Borussia Dortmund remains one of four undefeated clubs in the Champions League alongside with Malaga, Juventus and Schalke.
Borussia Dortmund can count on defenders Marcel Schmelzer and Neven Subotic. Ilkay Gundogan is out after due to injury, so Nuri Sahin could get his chance once again. Kevin Grosskreutz will miss this game due to pneumonia.
Shakhtar could loose more on the right wing after the January departure of Willian. Alex Teixeira is expected to replace him. Taison could make his debut in Champions League. Olexandr Kucher is banned, so Dmytro Chygrynskiy or Sergey Krivtsov will play alongside Yaroslav Rakytskyy at the back. Tomas Huschmann or Taras Stepanenko will partner Fernandinho in the centre.
