Newcastle vs Metalist Preview:

Date: February 14, 2013; Time: 8:05 PM GMT;

Venue: St. James’ Park — Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Magpies will try to get first-leg home advantage against difficult Ukrainians. Alan Pardew’s team will be looking for lead ahead of the second leg in Kharkov.

Newcastle are 16th in the EPL with 27 points from 26 games. They are having a very disappointing season, after finishing at excellent 5th place last season. But their form has improved lately. Their current form has seen two wins, one draw and two defeats from last five games. Last five home matches Newcastle have finished with two wins and three defeats. Wins against Aston Villa and Chelsea gave them some confidence. Also they have showed their new signings. To progress to this round Newcastle finished second in their group behind the winners Bordeaux.

Metalist are 4th in the Ukrainian Premier League with 36 points from 18 matches. They are 15 points behind the leaders Shakhtar, but could target on second placed Dnipro, who are just two points ahead of the final Champions League place.  To progress to this stage Metalist topped their group ahead of Bayern Leverkusen on head to head result.

Newcastle comes into this game without Yoan Gouffran. He sustained a leg injury against Tottenham. Hatem Ben Arfa has hamstring injury and Danny Simpson has toe problem, so they will not feature. Dan Gosling is still out of the game, and Haris Vuckic and Ryan Taylor both have knee ligaments.

Metalist stands in the middle of a winter break in the UPL and have no real injury worries. They have sold their leader Taison to Shakhtar Donetsk, but still can count on Europa League trophy.
