Chelsea vs West Ham

Chelsea vs West Ham Preview:

Date: March 17, 2013; Time: 4:00 PM UTC;

Venue: Stamford Bridge — London.

Blues will be looking for three points to hold up top-four position. Both teams will be searching for wins in the league.

Chelsea goes 4th in the league table with 52 points from 28 games, having 15 wins, 7 draws and 6 defeats so far this season. It is their first EPL game in over 2 weeks due to Cup game last weekend. The Blues are 2 points behind 3rd-placed Tottenham and 5 points above 5th Arsenal. Their recent form has been poor with 3 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat in their last 5 games. Last five home matches the Blues have finished with 4 wins and 1 draw.  They have drawn 2-2 with Man Utd in the FA Cup last weekend and won Steaua 3-1 in the Europa League in midweek. Fernando Torres has scored only his second goal in 2013 against Steaua in the Europa League, but it was a very important goal.

West Ham stands 12th in the league table with 33 points from 28 games, winning 9, drawing, 6 and losing 13 so far this season. There are 5 clubs in the EPL with 33 points, so they could go anywhere from 10th to 15th place this weekend.  The Hammers are 9 points clear the relegation zone.  West Ham won first fixture 3-1 earlier this season. The Hammers won 0-1 Stoke City away from last weekend.

Chelsea head coach Rafael Benitez probably will make some changes from the team which beat Steaua in the Europa League. Captain John Terry could keep his place ahead of Gary Cahill. Frank Lampard will return to the starting line, while Fernando Torres could once again play instead of Demba Ba. Oriol Romeu still remains long-term absentee with knee injury.

Sam Allardyce will play with the same squad that beat 1-0 Stoke last weekend. On loan Liverpool forward Andy Carroll will lead the line along side with Ricardo Vaz Te. Joe Cole has a hamstring injury and will miss this game. George McCartney and Kevin Nolan are also sidelined with injuries.
