Chelsea vs Basel Preview:

The Blues will be looking for first-ever Europa League final ticket. The Swiss club will aim to be the first European winner at the Stamford Bridge since April 2011. But Basel have to overturn two away goals deficit.

Chelsea have a great advantage after the first leg semi-final game, but they need to hold the lead with very dangerous Basel are capable to make a miracle. Chelsea took the lead in the first leg after just 12 minutes thanks to Viktor Moses. Basel got a controversial penalty in the 87th minute and Fabian Schar equalled the score to 1-1 and the home saide looked to be safe, but David Luiz has scored a fantastic late goal from a 25 yard freekick in the 94th minute.

Chelsea stands 3rd in the EPL with 65 points from 34 games. The Blues are 1 point ahead of 4th-plcaed Arsenal and 3 points ahead of 5th-placed Tottenham and have better chances to occupy the last direct Champions League spot. They got back to winning ways and their present form has seen 1 loss, 1 draw and 3 wins from last five games. Last five home matches the Blues have finished with 1 los and 4 wins. At the weekend they managed an important 2-0 win over Swansea, so they are still favourites in the top 4 race. But they have two hard games in the near future against Man United and Tottenham.

Basel tops the Swiss Super League with 57 points from 29 games. The Swiss table leaders are just 3 points ahead of 2nd-placed Grasshopper. Their present form has seen 2 wins, 1 draw and 2 defeats from last five games. Last five away matches Basel have finished with 2 wins and 3 draws. This weekend they suffered a shock 3-0 loss at home to Luzern. But 2nd-placed Grasshopper also were defeated.


Chelsea will play without Ashley Cole due to suspension. So Ryan Bertrand will once again play instead England’s International. Interim coach Rafael Benitez has no fresh injury worries. Oriol Romeu is long-term absente. Marko Marin has a thigh injury, while Demba Ba is cup-tied.

Basel head coach Murat Yakin is expected to play with the same line-up. Kay Voser is the only injured player for Basel. The only change will be at the centre of the defence, whith Gaston Sauro will play instead of the suspended Aleksandar Dragovic.
