Billions of fans from around the world enjoy watching the action of their favorite football clubs. Almost as many watch the matches with particular interest when there is some football betting involved. However, some club followers are unaware of how the process of betting on their favorite clubs works. For those who have ever wanted to place their money where there hearts are and support their clubs with a healthy wager, here’s how to do it.
The most prevalent type of football betting is the Money Line bet. The Money Line bet gives the player three options: Home Win, Away Win or Draw.
If the number has a plus sign (+) in front of it, that number represents the amount the player can win on a $100 bet. A team with a plus sign in front of its money line bet is the underdog. If the number has a minus sign (-) in front of it, that number represents the amount the player must bet to win $100. A team with a minus sign in front of its money line bet is the favorite.
An example from Premier League football betting:
Chelsea (H) -125
Arsenal (A) +250
The player betting on Chelsea (the home team favorite) must bet $125 to win $100. The player betting on Arsenal (the away team underdog) can win $250 on a $100 bet. Players who bet on a draw can win $150 on a $100 bet.
If players expect a high-scoring shootout or a low-scoring defensive battle, regardless of the winner, these players can choose to bet on the total number of goals in the match. This type of bet, known as a “total” bet or “over/under” bet, allows players to bet on if the total number of goals will be over or under a set number, typically 2.5 goals. The reason for a “half-goal” in the total is to prevent a “push”, or tie bet in which the player neither loses nor wins and receives a refund on his bet.
An example of an over/under bet from World Cup football betting
Over 2.5 Goals: -200
Under 2.5 goals: +250
