On Monday January 11 the 2015/2016 college football season will conclude as the Alabama Crimson Tide take on the Clemson Tigers for the BCS National Championship in Glendale, Arizona. Those lucky enough to afford a seat to the game will have no problem finding college football national championship tickets, but they won’t come cheap.
Alabama is no stranger to the season’s biggest stage, having won all three national championship games they’ve played in since the introduction of the BSC National Championship Game in 1999. Clemson was named National Champions once in 1981 (pre BCS), but has plenty of experience in the postseason, having won 20 bowl games in school history. With the success of these programs, especially in recent years, tickets to see them have climbed substantially in price. Alabama ranks #5 in college football’s most expensive tickets, with an average price of $180, an 8.5% increase from 2014. Clemson ranks #22 with an average price of $115, a 15% increase from 2014. The start of this season saw Alabama a part of two of 2015’s five most expensive college football games. The average ticket for Alabama at Georgia on October 3 was a staggering $680, and Alabama at Auburn on November 28 (The Iron Bowl) was $615.
If you were not awarded college football national championship tickets by one of the participating Universities, or in the random drawing (which is almost like winning a mega-millions lotto), then the influx of pricey tickets flooding the secondary market looks like your best option. But fear not, as waiting until the last minute may now be your best time to buy them. On January 1, the morning after the championship matchup was decided, the average ticket price was $1,400, down 6% from just two days before. This supports the trend of falling prices in the week leading up to the big game. As ticket prices should continue to decline, the days before heading to Arizona is the right time to pull the trigger.
As expected, National Championship ticket prices are quite a step-up from the regular season. The average price to see an Alabama home football game this season was $175, while the average price to see a Clemson home game was $115. The current average National Championship ticket is $1,000, with a get-in price of $350, and the most expensive going for $4,500. The current average Super Bowl 50 ticket price is $4,600, with a get-in price of $2,800, and the most expensive going for $17,500. The average price to see an NFL game this season was $85.
Last years Super Bowl 49 was the most expensive in NFL history, with an average ticket price of $4,600. That average is 100% more expensive than the previous year. Last year’s college National Championship game saw a significant decline from 2014, especially during the week of the game. Tickets to see Ohio State play Oregon in the 2015 National Championship dropped to an average of $690 the Friday before the game. Comparatively, those who waited until the days before Super Bowl 49 saw an average ticket price of $11,500, with a get-in price of $7,000.
