West Indies beat India to win ICC U19 World Cup final

West Indies defeated India by five wickets to win the ICC U19 World Cup final in Dhaka and secure the title for the first time.

Ryan John and Alzarri Joseph grabbed three wickets each as West Indies bowled favourites India out for 145 runs.

Keacy Carty then scored an unbeaten 52 to steer his team to 146-5 and victory with just three balls to spare.

It was the first time India had lost a youth international since losing in the quarter-finals of the 2014 tournament.

They got off to a terrible start with opener Risabh Pant run out when the keeper spotted him wandering outside of his crease, and rolled the ball into the stumps.

Anmolpreet Singh nicked a rising Joseph delivery behind and Ishan Kishan was trapped lbw. When Washington Sunder steered to mid-off, India were 41-4.

Arman Jaffer also fell cheaply but Sarfraz Khan (51) slowly rebuilt, adding 37 with Mahipal Lomror (19) who eventually nicked Chemar Holder behind.

India’s second highest scorer was extras, with 23, as the Windies quicks erred in accuracy, but 145 never looked likely to be enough, even on such a slow pitch.

In the reply, the West Indies chose to take their time, and had reached 67-2 when they suffered a major wobble. They collapsed to 72-5, with left-arm spinner Mayank Dagar (3-25) causing them all sorts of problem.

But Keemo Paul (40) and Carty dug in and inched their way towards the target, with 24 needed off five overs, and then nine off two.

Paul was dropped by Avesh Khan, but in the final over he top-edged over the keeper to seal the victory.

West Indies captain Shimron Hetmyer praised his bowlers in particular for toppling the favourites.

“We weren’t supposed to be champions but we came out on top,” he said. “The pacers used the pitch to their advantage, they stood out for us. Carty and Paul are aggressive players, they made the adjustment. They kept a calm head.”
